A Vintage Halloween Craft DIY!

Is anyone else ready for fall & getting excited about Halloween?
Having a 7 year old grandson, I can never have the
decorations up early enough for him. ;)

Last week, I enjoyed some time alone at one of So Cal's best
antique shopping areas, The Orange Circle on Glassell. This little
historic area has been the location for many movies & TV shows
such as 'That Thing You Do' & 'The Ghost Whisperer'.

I'll have to do a post on it next, because if you haven't been there
yet, you're missing a jewel of a little antiquing center. A couple of
my favorites are The Orange Circle Antique Mallwhere I had
a booth with a girlfriend for years & Country Roads Antiques.

But one of my very favorites is a TINY little shop that has been there
for 19 years, The Victoria Company. My daughter has been going
there with me since she was a little girl. Donna the owner, is as sweet
as pie & she rolls old school, no computer, no facebook, no blog, no
website, just a hand written receipt & a lovely smile.

I bought several things while I was at The Victoria Co,
two were cute vintage Halloween decoration using
fun vintage images. I have already given those away
as gifts, but I'm going to show you my version
of the decoration...mine has LACE,
of course!!!

Here is my mini tutorial...these are SO fun to make!
Step 1, you need a vintage image that you would like
to use, I've included some at the end of the post that
I've already tinted in Photoshop. I printed these
as 5x7's on a card stock & I ALWAYS
shrink to fit, not crop to fit.

Step 2, I found some fun scrapbook paper that I liked. I love
the paper that is double sided, so you can use the contrasting
side too! After cutting the image out, use it as a pattern & cut
the scrapbook paper out for the back of this project.
Step 3, get out your handy dandy glue gun & glue 3 sides
together, leaving one long side open for the moment.

Step 4, see that box of tissues I have on my work table? Well
it wasn't there because I had a cold, that's our stuffin! Insert
2 pieces of tissue into the open side of your project. I did it
carefully, folding the tissue in half & doing one at a time.

Once it's to your liking, glue down the open side. Any glue that
pushes out on the sides is NO big deal, wait till it's dry & just
peel that off. Step 5, it's at this point that I do a little decoration
that needs to dry. I use Stickles which is a glitter glue with a
point. The way I like to use it is to squeeze a little bit onto a
paper plate & use my finger to dab it on where I want it. In the
picture above I used gold on her dress & black on her hat. I
then used ColorBox Chalk Inkpad to add color to the sides.
I do this to most of my paper decor to add an aged look to
the new card stock. Let dry. So at the end of these steps it
should look kinda like ALICE!

Step 6, add a hanger. As you can see I did 2 different kinds, the fabric
one is much more simple. Just attach a length of fabric to the back
with a glue gun. I used some tea stained, lightweight canvas, but you
could use ribbon, cord, whatever you have handy. Because the
ones I bought had wire hangers, I did those too. I simply added
2 small holes, put in an eyelet, hit it with a hammer to smash it
& put my wire through it, both look nice.

Step 7, this is my favorite part...adding lace & buttons!
The ones I bought had no lace at all, they were completely made
of paper, but since I'm the doiley QUEEN, I had to pull out all
my doileys. I usually made between 4 to 7 layers on this step.
Looking at the first picture in the post, LUCKY STARS, I'll explain.
1st layer is tea stained cutwork lace, 2nd, little balls of threads that
come off your fabric after you stain it, then dry it. 3rd, a piece of
scrapbook paper cut into a scalloped circle about 3" in dia. {I have a
punch I love that makes perfect scalloped circles for me that I
bought at the craft store, it's the pink thing on the table} 4th,
a flower cut out of an old doiley, 5th, more threads, 6th,
a vintage button & 7th, a smaller vintage button.
Are we tired yet?? lol

I glued most of this down with the glue gun & used fabric glue
just for the balls of thread, but the glue gun would work just
fine for all of it. This is where you can let your creativity
go & do as much or as little as you like.

Step 8, the paper crown on top. This accent is really what gives
this project a pop. I had never made one of these before, so it
was new to me & I just made it up as I went along. It's basically 2
folded semi circles attached with hot glue. I took the length of
my 12"x12" scrapbook paper & made two, 2 1/2" wide
strips. I fan folded them at 1/2" back & forth until they were
both done. You are now going to attach these & make a
complete  circle, which for me was a little tricky...I just
could have used 1 more hand. ;)

Using the glue gun I attached the right sides of both strips, it looks like
a bracelet at this point. Then, I pushed the paper down flat on a surface
getting the center of each fold to come together into a circle. Holding
it in position with one hand & hot gluing the center with the other hand,
you create the base of your circle. Then take 2 more of the 3" scalloped
circles made from your scrapbook paper & glue 1 on each side.

Now glue your favorite side of the crown half way down onto the back of
your project. I like to use where the 2 halves of the circle come together
as my visual. Once this is done your project looks pretty on both sides.

Step 9, your final step...Glitter it UP!!!
Now that your finished handling it, you can embellish your project
with as much glitter & confetti as you want. I use glitter glue,
applying it with my finger on the areas I want to decorate. I
also used some more of the Stickles to follow the design in
my patterned paper & to put on the edges of the folds on
the crown. I also used it on my finger again, dabbing it
onto the buttons. There's no such thing as...
too much glitter, right!

So, here's my finished product hanging with my great~grandparents
wedding photo. You can tie some lace onto to handle if you like...

or some fun Halloweenie ribbon. I also added some Halloween
labels I found on Pinterest & printed out on card stock. These
Lucky Stars are hangin with my Daddy, when he was a baby.
Too much fun!!!

Hope you enjoyed the tutorial & have fun getting into
the Halloween Spirit. What I LOVE about these,
is I can make them for all the holidays!!!

The Ugly Truth...

Hope y'all had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend!
I had a 3 day Yard Sale, which kept me busy & made me some
extra $$$. What a great combination, right!

With a title like 'The Ugly Truth', you must be expecting some juicy
morsels of scandal or at the very least some torrid trouble that I've
gotten myself into, but what I'm going to share with you is a little
bit of movie TRIVIA. My brother & sister-in-law live in the 1930
apartment that Katherine Heigl lived in the movie, 'The Ugly Truth'!

This cracks me up...I found this picture on the internet of a random girl
standing in front of their apartments under the title,
I am NOT a STALKER. lol

Now, their apartment is not just one of the apartments in this
quint, California bungalow style, courtyard setting...

it is THE apartment they filmed 'The Ugly Truth' in.

Kinda CoooooL, right!  ;)

Sooo, since I'm their family & you're my friends...
you get a personal tour of this awesome little jewel, with all the charm
& character that only a 1930, Los Feliz home could have.

This is Pichu, catching some of the rays of light filtering
in through the gorgeous leaded windows.
{can you see my brother's reflection in the window?}

OK, leaded, stained & bayed windows... Aweeeeeeeee.

I have to go to a post office to get my mail, not only is this mail box
awesomely vintage, the mail lands on their floor...must be nice!

Their view into the courtyard, no wonder Pichu loves sitting here.

A Peek~A~Boo window in the front door, too cute.

This architectural detail goes all the way around the living room,
absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

What was once a phone box, see the shelf below for the phone book?

Here it is in the background of a scene with Gerard Butler & Kathrine Heigl.
The dining room is through the arch behind them...

& the corner cabinet built~ins & old windows in there are to die for.

The original old ice box that is tiled into the kitchen,
how cool is that?

The kitchen is completely tiled with soft yellow tiles & has a built~in
mirror/medicine cabinet & a little space to put your sponge.
I forgot to get a picture of the tiny milk bottle door,
where the milkman would leave your milk.
Those were the days!

The huge downstairs bathroom window.

A gorgeous upstairs nook with a built~in linen closet...love this!

This is the subtle design that goes around the walls of the
master bedroom. All the little added details that
no one takes the time to make anymore.

The base of the built~in vanity. I didn't want to include the top, as it
had personal items on it, but it is AMAZING. It has a vintage
round mirror, with great drawers & cabinets. I would love
to get ready for my day sitting here.

The Spanish style baloney over looking their courtyard &
gorgeous bougainvillea, a California staple.

The view looking down into the courtyard...

not too shabby!!!

I love this sweet baptismal font, or maybe it's just
a bird bath, but it's perfect.

Headin down the Famous Stairs, which were featured in the movie...

yeah, I was standin there a minute ago. I think I was taking
up a little more space then Katherine, but I was standin right there! lol

Well, that's 'The Ugly Truth' friends.
The Ugly Truth is that I ADORE my brother & sister~in~laws new
apartment & think I need to live in one of the units right across from
theirs. Wouldn't that be so fun? It could be my CITY crib.
Enjoy...

Officer, CUFF Me...Please!

Sew...I DO have some good stories about thinkin I'd be cuffed by
an officer on my cross country trek to Texas,
but I'll save that for another time.  ;)

I must say though, I have been obsessing about cuffs. A much
softer & much more beautiful kind of a cuff...
a Gorgeous Fabric Cuff Bracelet.

I've been wanting to make one for ever sew long. I love the one's made of
Leather & Lace & always think of the Stevie Nicks & Don Henley song
when I hear those two words together, but since I had no leather
mine would be made of scraps of fabric & lace.

Looking through my Jewelry Love Board on Pinterest, I saw a sweet
& simple cuff tutorial by Vintiquites Workshop & it inspired
me to get all my tiny bits & pieces of vintage love out
& try something new.

Here's the lovely cuff made by Thespoena McLaughlin & her awesome
TUTORIAL. Thank you SEW much for sharing this with us, your words
were just what I needed to guide me through these uncharted waters.

What I loved about her method was that all that it takes is some
scraps & a needle & thread. I also used some fabric glue
just to secure any loose frays of fabric.

I ADORE the way my cuff turned out & enjoyed making it so much,
I'm sure this will be my NEW jewelry craze for the moment!

Sew, like I said...Officer CUFF me, PLEASE!!! LOL
